"Entrepôts et lieux de stockage du monde gréco-romain antique"
Reconstruction hypothesis of the Grandi Horrea - N. Monteix (EFR)
The "Entrepôts et lieux de stockage du monde gréco-romain antique" is a research project funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and carried by three French research laboratories on sciences of Antiquity: the Centre Camille Jullian (CCJ), the Institut de Recherche en Architecture Antique (IRAA) and the French School of Athens (EfA).
Until the end of the Ancient Regime, storage was one of the solutions most frequently used to overcome specific problems caused by the supplying of these non-rural populations, which were city dwellers and soldiers. The granary occupies a central position in these supply systems, both from a practical point of view, for the possibilities of long-term preservation that it allows, and from a political point of view, for the stakes it raises with regard to ownership and management.
This subject touches on the major queries in the economic history of Ancient Regime societies in the Mediterranean area and is likely to advance the knowledge of these questions and renew the research issues. The project aims to achieve a stronger knowledge of ancient storage systems, notably while creating an international network among researchers currently working on this issue and encouraging new research on this topic. This website results from a dual purpose: on the one hand to widely disseminate information about the project, on the other hand to constitute one of the research scientific tools by creating an online collaborative database. This database is open to public on this website.
