In the framework of French National Research Agency Program related to “Warehouses and storage spaces in ancient Greece and Rome”, the Ostia-Portus Archeological Atelier is organizing, for the period 12th-23rd of September 2011, an international thematic workshop addressed to about fifteen PhD students on the following subjects: history and archeology of greek-roman ancient world, physical sciences.
The thematic workshop is part of an ongoing archaeological program about warehouses in Ostia and Portus. It will include a practical part during which, beyond an introduction to archaeology of the ancient Roman buildings, it will offer a workshop on various topics about the functioning of the horrea of Ostia and their integration into the urban fabric. This will involve more research activities carried out during the first years of the project on the architectural design and on the technical equipment of the storage cells.
Moreover, the multidisciplinary nature of the group will enhance exchanges and methodological comparisons between human and physical sciences. This scientific collaboration will be especially helpful to lead a common experimentation that will aim to give back the environmental conditions inside the storage unit. The research protocol will involve a series of surveys and field measurements in order to establish an accurate assessment of the state of the existing structures, with a specific knowledge of available measurement tools. This approach methodology will permit the acquisition and the development of technical competences for the evaluation of the conditions of conservation and degradation of the archaeological sites.
The research activities will be developed in the stores of Ostia and will permit a general reflection on the topographic and timing distribution of the storage areas in the site harbour of Rome. It will but also clarifies the knowledge on the technical functioning of the roman’s storage cells through the integration between physical sciences and archaeological considerations. This approach will initiate the experts in physics to the sciences of antiquity discovering a particularly innovative and challenging field, and the archaeologists will have the possibility to enrich their knowledge from a technical and physical point of view.
Last, the proposed practical approach will be completed with a series of conferences, visits and presentations to promote the discussion on various topics.
The participants will be held to write a relation at the end of their stay.
The cost of the accommodation (in a collective apartment in Ostia) and for the meals will be provided by the ANR funding. Travel expenses will be paid by the participants or by their school's doctoral programs.
The applications have to include a motivation letter, a curriculum vitae, a presentation letter from the Director of Research and a certificate of registration of the doctorate school.
The applications must arrive by April 30, 2011, exclusively in electronic form at the following address: . The list of selected dossiers will be issued within the last week of May 2011.
